Eastern coast has many unexplored authentic dishes and beverages. Some of them are beverages that are known to be alcoholic and are produced by locals. Among those, the ones that are largely produced are Toddy and Wine.
Traditional wineries
Fermenting wine is mostly undertaken by Burghers of Batticaloa. They have a custom of fermenting various fruits such as grapes, dates and even king coconut water. These beverages are largely produced by these communities, targeting christmas and New Year eve and they share them among their relatives and neighbours. However, owing to the high demand of home made beverages, these are now produced in a scale of small businesses.
Toddy tappers of the east
Toddy, is a fermented form of a sweet sap that is collected from Palmyrah and Coconut trees. Considering the population of coconut and palmyrah trees, coconut toddy is produced widely in Batticaloa and Palmyrah toddy is tapped in Trincomalee. However, these activities are now being presented to travelers as an income generation mechanism by the people from the region.
