Puliyanthivu, which is also known as the “turtle island” by geographists, which looks like a turtle when seen from an aerial view, covers most of the historical monuments dating back to the colonial period. Starting from the Batticaloa gate where the Dutch were known to be entering into the island; to several historical places such as Batticaloa fort, which was initially built by Dutch and then were ruled by Portuguese and British colonial rulers.
William ault
A statue of William Ault is placed near Batticaloa gate within the premises of Gandhi park in Puliyanthivu. William Ault is known as a morning star of Methodism in Batticaloa. During his period, he lit the first light to Batticaloa through the beginning of a school which is now named Methodist Central College in 1814. The present Ault Memorial Puliyantivu Methodist church, Batticaloa was built in 1838 in memory of William Ault.
Methodist Church
The one and only protestandant church in Batticaloa that was founded by British colonial rulers during their reign. This church is situated in a very calm and silent place in between the premises of Batticaloa District Secretariat and the District court. Even Though, this church is visited by a limited number of crowds, those are angilican christians in Batticaloa, it has its value through history.
Seemai panai
Seemai panai, also known as Seeni panai is an exotic palmyrah tree that has several different features from a normal palmyrah tree. These trees, unlike common palmyrah trees produce branches and little in size and more sweeter fruits. Being identified as Hyphae thebaica, by its botanical features, it is believed to be brought into Batticaloa, through the lagoon from an arabic country. These trees are situated along Batticaloa lagoon near Gandhi park and through Lady manning drive.
Batticaloa Fort
Batticaloa fort is a majestic monument that was built by Dutch in 1682. The unique structure of this fort is built by stones and corals. Around one third of the fort is surrounded by Batticaloa lagoon in a side and the other two sides are surrounded by canals that are known to be used as a protective mechanism hosting crocodiles.
The fort still remains in a considerable situation giving space for several government departments including the District secretariat of Batticaloa.
Tourist information center
This little building serves as the tourist information centre, where local and foreign travelers can get information about tourist hotspots and travel suggestions within Batticaloa. This centre is now being managed by government authorities.
Batticaloa gate
Batticaloa gate is located within a peaceful surrounding of the Mahatma Ghandhi Park. Rev. William Ault, the morning star of Methodism, known to be in 1814 arrived in this place. An old day crane can be spotted near this majestic gate that stands in the bank of Batticaloa lagoon.
