The story flows as follows, a devotee who had traveled to Kataragama from India had buried his "Vel" a spear of Lord Muruga here. One day, another old man spotted a lingam with an elephant face while walking through this place. This is what is worshiped today as "Swayambulingka Pillaiyar".
To pay homage to the legendary village, the chief of the Vedha, `` Kaluwan '', who cut the dune forests near this stream and a beautiful field. The place where "Kaluvan" worshiped was called the "Kaludevan Temple," which is now Kaluthavalai temple.
