Ancient technologies, that date back to thousand years, leave us surprised at the knowledge and wisdom held by our ancestors. Among several other technologies, an ancient transport system that still remains in a modified form can be still experienced in several locations of Batticaloa. These ferries in these villages are motor operated unlike early days and are locally known as Paadhai and the boat ramps used for it are locally known as Thuraiyadi.
Kurumanvely thurai
This is one of the old ferries that is used frequently by passengers who travel towards Mandur from Kurumanvely. The temple of Lord Ganesha near this ferry is visited by a large number of hindus.
Manmunai thurai
Manmunai thurai is not active anymore as it has been replaced by a bridge now. This beautiful ferry point has a view of fishing activities and mangrove view besides the lagoon that is slightly brackish.
Batticaloa fort
There seems to be two spots near Batticaloa fort that can be identified as ancient ferry points. One of these ferry points is now being used as a viewpoint of the beauty of Kallady bridge and Batticaloa lagoon by travelers and archeology enthusiasts who visit the Batticaloa fort.
Batticaloa gate
Near Batticaloa gate, there is an ancient ferry point that can be spotted drawn inside the lagoon. This ferry point has a historical significance of being used by Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial rulers for transportation of goods and people. Even though this has no active evidence, this remains a historical monument.
