Among several deities being worshipped by hindus around the world, this devotion of cobras are somewhat different in these rural villages. Cobras are considered as deities of security and safe keeping. Thousands of men and women who follow hinduism worship these cobra deities which is named “Naagathambiraan” where Naga means Cobra and Thambiran means deity in Tamil. These cobras are known to be in both female and male forms in various temples.
Dutchbar
This temple is located within one kilometer from Kallady bridge. This temple is situated under a large banyan tree and the supporting root system of this tree makes the place more darker. A statue of a five headed cobra is located in this temple and is worshipped by a large number of devotees. This deity is celebrated by its devotees every friday with offerings of egg and milk and the devotees will be served with pongal.
Kallady
This temple in Kallady is located on the border between the village and the cemetery. Devotees of this temple believe that this deity is located there to save them all from evil spirits that rise from the graveyard. Major offerings to this deity are milk and eggs that are brought in by these devotees and a stone statue of a king cobra with five heads is established in this temple.
Pandariyavely
The main deity at Pandariyaveli Naga temple is a cobra with a women facet. This temple has a long history and is being visited by many devotees on fridays. This deity is offered with egg, milk and fruits which are kept inside a hollow space at the root of a tree situated in front of the temple by the chief priest of the temple. It is believed that these divine cobras visit the temple when no one is around and consumes the offerings.
