Batticaloa gets its visitors mostly towards a very few destinations that are visited by thousands of people every time. There are several other hidden destinations that are unspoken but have a potential for a tourist economy. Nowadays, these places are becoming popular after several developments in infrastructure facilities around the country. Such places can be promoted as tourist destinations in order to increase the tourist economy of these regions.
Mottakori lighthouse
This is a less noticed ancient lighthouse which is now in a damaged condition. This is known to be a lighthouse that has been primarily used before construction of the new one, that is remaining in a good condition now and is visited by several tourists. This old mottakori lighthouse is situated a few kilometers away from the kallady bridge.
Miyangal Kulam
Miyangal Pond can be reached by traveling 6-7 Km from ‘Kudumbi Malai’. It is the pond that is mainly used for fishing purposes. Yearly fingerling fish are being added to this pond for fish farming. This pond's route is filled with nature wonders, as we can see beautiful paddy fields, mountains and rocks along the two sides of the roads, which lead to the pond. It is a very appropriate destination for nature lovers.
Munai Murugan
This is a less visited temple of lord Muruga, which gets its name for the way it is located near the bay that is called Munai in Tamil. It's a small murugan temple which is being reconstructed into a big temple. This temple is located in a very calm environment near a rocky beach a few kilometers away from Passikudah beach stretch. The view of the wavy sea and the rocks gives a mind blowing experience.
Nassivan Thivu
Nasivanthivu is a rural village that hosts a marginalized community of people. This little lagoon island is surrounded by a lagoon and along the east a little beach stretch has several patches of mangroves. Owing to the geomorphology of this location, lagoon fishing is the major livelihood of people living around these areas. This island is not highly inhabited by people. Live crab fishery and lagoon fishing can be sited around these mangrove patches and on the coastal end of this island there is a mini fisheries harbour, that is accessed by locals.
